SHOW REVIEW: ARüGüLA, THE SPORES, NEW SKIN @ VIPER ROOM

Arügüla, puppet overlords of German death metal, just can't find a drummer, and so, every Thursday in August, the band members, accompanied by The Spores, have situated themselves inside the Viper Room in search of that Holy Grail, the perfect drummer. The Thursday night we caught Arügüla was no different, drummers ranging in age and skill approached the stage and auditioned for the band. Arügüla flung insults at the wannabe drummers and, sometimes, the drummers shot back. Thus, comedy ensued.
Prior to Arügüla, The Spores treated fans to a short but sweet set of the tunes that have made the band local favorites. A highlight of the performance was "Sound of Strummer," a live mash-up of The Clash and Simon and Garfunkel brought to life by singer/bassist Molly McGuire's dramatic reworking of the vocal melody for "Should I Stay or Should I Go."
London-based New Skin preceded The Spores with a set minimal pop-rock with hints of a nightclub beat. Looking like she could be the third member of early-1980s goth-pop outfit Strawberry Switchblade but with a voice more in line with Alison Moyet, singer Jen is a powerful frontwoman with enough charisma to help push this band to the next level.

Hey! The day is finally here: 1090 Club's "Shipwrecked on Shores" is finally out today. If you didn't pre-order it from our store, you still can. If you're into instant-gratification, then head on over to your favorite record store and pick it up there instead.
